My blue Sapphire dress
In the leadup to the Sapphire launch, I thought it would be fun to do a series of posts about each of the Sapphire dresses and tops I’ve made for myself (this is the fourth). Plan is to post some photos along with a few notes on each dress so you can learn about the fabric I chose and any mods or adjustments to the pattern pieces that I made.
PATTERN
Sapphire (coming soon!), with the longer sleeve and dress length. I made just one change to the pattern, which was to lengthen it; I am 5’8” so I added 2” to the pattern - which is designed for about 5’5-5’6 - to bring the skirt to the length the pattern intends.
Fabric
The fabric is a soft-washed linen from Blackbird. The soft-washed linens are lovely, though as I wrote in this post, they are now subject to a pretty hefty tariff (+125%-145%!?) for US customers as they cross the border. So I don’t know. It’s too depressing - let’s move on.
Thoughts on blue
After purchasing this fabric last June, I held on to it for quite a while and I didn’t manage to cut into it until about a month ago, when I was motivated to sew it up because I really needed a blue dress for the “cover shot.” I’m probably the only person who even notices this but for Emerald it was a green dress, for Rose it was pink pants, for Citrine it was a yellow cardigan, for Ruby it’s a red dress…I’m very color-oriented, to be sure. So I knew that the cover photo for Sapphire had to be blue. And yes, I know there are many different colors of sapphire gems, but a “classic” sapphire is blue. The thing is - I don’t actually wear that much bright blue or own any fabric in this cobalt hue, so I had to actively search for this color fabric last spring when I was really starting to work on the pattern in earnest. But now I feel really drawn to it and have noticed myself finding more and more things in this bright blue hue. Is that happening to you too? It’s hard to tell if it’s in the zeitgeist or if it’s just me — like for example, brown is also experiencing a comeback. Who knew?
Good news - the Sapphire Pattern is coming soon - so watch this space for updates on when it is ready! Get details and see more photos and posts over on the Sapphire page:
