Today we’ll be gathering the front and back (and sleeves!), and attaching them to the main yoke.

STEP 3. GATHER FRONT AND BACK

Set your machine stitch length to the longest setting, and sew two lines of stitches along the top edges of the front and back, 3/8” [10 mm] and 5/8” [16 mm] away from the edge. You can also set the machine tension to high, which will help gather up the fabric as you stitch.

🔥 hot tip 🔥

GATHER YOUR SLEEVE CAPS AT THE SAME TIME! Sew two lines of stitches between the gathering notches along the tops of the sleeve caps. Set these aside for later.

Pull gently on the top two threads (the higher tension ones) on both sides of the front and back to gather them up. Use the bottom of the yokes as a guide: you need the width of the back to match the bottom of the back yoke, and the width of the front to match the bottom of the front yoke.

STEP 4. ATTACH FRONT AND BACK TO MAIN YOKE

Pin the gathered back to the bottom of the back yoke, with right sides together. Distribute the gathers evenly across the entire width and add additional pins or clips.

Sew together with a 1/2” [13 mm] seam, and repeat for the front/front yoke.

CHECK FIT: At this point I like to try it on again and check the distribution of the gathers. Sometimes you’ll put it on and one gather will just look weird or too big or slanty and you need to fix it. Trust me on this!!

Once you are happy with your gathers, go ahead and gently pull on the gathering threads to remove them!

TOMORROW: We’ll add the yoke lining and finish it using the…drumroll please…BURRITO METHOD!!
