Friday Faves / vol. 11

Hellooo!!

It’s my birthday! I'm 45 today. I’m currently relaxing at my studio with a free birthday macaron from the shop down the street and a cup of tea. It’s been a fun birthday week so far with deck cocktails on two different nights and lunch with friends at Tomokun yesterday. Tonight Mr Rae is going to make reubens for dinner, plus he picked up my favorite cake which is so yummy.

This weekend, we’re going to finish moving Elliot down to the basement bedroom (we had egress windows installed this summer) so he can have a room of his own and not have to share with his little brother, and we get to hang out with my sister Kricket and her husband Ross on Sunday. I’m also hoping to finish sewing my quilted coat together.

Some other things to share with you…

pretending: I’ve been enjoying these temporary kale tattoos from Tattly, which look surprisingly real. It’s a superfood! It’s so 2014!

reading: I don’t think I’m quite academic enough to properly appreciate How to Do Nothing by Jenny Odell (it reads a like a Master’s thesis…I took it in small bits, with lots of breaks), but the concept — resistance through reclaiming one’s attention and diverting it into physical connections with real people and places — is one I can get behind. Plus the cover is pretty, and matches the needlepoint I’m working on. LOL.

stitching: I picked up this pretty wool embroidery project that I started back in 2016 and then set aside for a number of years. I still love the colors and the design, and I can’t wait to finish it so I can frame it and hang it up.

sewing: I sewed myself a new Jade Tee and added width to the sleeves for some big sleeve drama. The color is jade, so I guess that makes it a Jade Jade! (shown here with Rose Pants)

watching: Have I Ever binged an entire new season and then rewatched all of the previous seasons’ episodes as quickly as I did this past week with Never Have I Ever (Season 3)? I have never.

laughing: I discovered @OfficialSadBeige on Instagram (also @sadbeige on Tiktok) via Dorie Shafrir’s newsletter this week, and spent most of a morning laughing my ass off. Have you noticed that the most expensive children’s clothing and toys are all basically different hues of beige? She makes fun of that trend and more all while pretending to be Werner Herzog. I’d suggest that you start with this one, this one, and this one, or read Dorie Shafrir’s piece for an excellent dissection to go deeper.

Wishing you all a delightful weekend!

xo,
Rae
