Get ready for a Garnet Sewalong!
Let’s make a Garnet together!! Each day next week starting Monday, I’ll be posting step-by-step photos of Garnet, so you can sew along with me and make a beautiful gathered top with sleeves and a square yoke!
Want videos?
In addition to the full sewalong here on the blog, I’ve created step-by-step VIDEOS over on my Substack for paid subscribers (I’m fondly calling the paid Substack tier my “Cosmic Sewing Club” - it’s a mere $5/month to subscribe and you’ll also be supporting my work, so if you want a video option, that’s in the works over there).
Meanwhile, I’ve made a short video intro for everyone; see it at the bottom of this post!!
Here are all of the posts in the Garnet Sewalong:
Intro: Gather your Materials (this post!)
Day 1: Steps 1 & 2 - Cut out pieces, attach interfacing, sew yokes together
Day 2: Steps 3 & 4 - Gathering and Attaching yokes
Day 3: Steps 5 & 6 - Lining the yoke (burrito day!)
Day 4: Steps 7 & 9 - Sewing the sleeves and side seams
Day 4 Bonus: Adding the tucks (Step 8)
Day 5: Steps 10 & 11 - Finishing sleeves and hems
GATHER YOUR MATERIALS
You can get ready for the sewalong by gathering your materials. Here’s what you’ll need:
Garnet pattern
If you don’t already have the Garnet pattern, you can get it in my shop. It’s in digital format and comes with layered printable files so you can print just the size(s) you need. A0 and print at home pages are included. REMINDER: IT’S ALSO 25% OFF RIGHT NOWwoven fabric
You’ll need either one or two fabrics, depending on whether you want the yoke and cuffs to contrast the body and sleeves or if you want them to be the same fabric. You might also want to make a decision about whether you want to add the tucks or not - either.
To figure out how much fabric you need, first measure and choose your size (see this post for measuring tips - I recommend using your chest measurement to select your size), and then use your size to find yardage amounts on the yardage charts. Size and Yardage charts are on the Garnet page
(Remember that muslin is a great way to go if this is your first time making Garnet!)
REMEMBER TO WASH AND DRY YOUR FABRIC BEFORE YOU START!
interfacing
The outer yoke and cuffs are interfaced, so you just need a small piece of garment interfacing, less than 1/2 yard. Here’s a post about my favorite kind of interfacing (I usually use the Pro Sheer Elegance Light for Garnet)
thread
polyester, not cotton
elastic for cuffs (if not doing the flat cuff)
You’ll need less than a yard of 1/2 inch [13mm] wide elastic for the cuffs if you’re doing elasticated cuffs rather than flat cuffs.
PRINT, ASSEMBLE, AND TRACE YOUR PATTERN
Next you’ll want to print out your pattern (or send it to a copyshop to have it printed - check out my list of spots where I print my patterns in this post). If you’re printing it at home, you’ll need to assemble it (see How to print and assemble a PDF pattern if you need some pointers). Either way, I always recommend tracing your pattern using tracing paper.
Related: see this post from the Rose sewalong that shows all of these steps, from printing, to assembling, to tracing the pattern pieces.
Then you’ll be ready to cut out your pieces and start sewing!!
OK! Here’s my little intro for you (if it’s not showing up for you on this page, you can also view it HERE!)
If you’re sewing along with us, I would love to know about it!! Comment, or tag me @madebyrae and use the #garnetsewalong tag when you post your in-progress pics (or finished pics!) on socials.
